The multipurpose cargo terminal will handle 18.33 million tonnes a year.
Essar Ports has received a letter of award from the Deendayal Port Authority to build a multipurpose cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra, off Kandla in Gujarat. The company emerged as the highest bidder in a global tender.
The project, to be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis, will cost about Rs 2,276 crore. Essar will invest about Rs 1,553 crore, while the port authority will contribute about Rs 723 crore.
The terminal will have four berths with a total length of 1,200 metres and an annual capacity of 18.33 million tonnes. It will be able to handle Cape-size vessels of up to 170,000 tonnes deadweight.
The port authority will dredge the channel and build a common approach road. The terminal is expected to ease congestion at existing dry-cargo berths.
