Uranus reaches opposition on November 25, its brightest of the year

23 October 2026

The ice giant will sit near the Pleiades and be visible all night through binoculars.

Uranus reaches opposition on November 25, when Earth passes between the planet and the Sun. Opposition is the best time of the year to observe it, as the planet is at its closest and brightest.

At magnitude 5.6, Uranus is only just visible to the naked eye under very dark skies. It stays close to this brightness from mid-October to mid-December.

This year the planet lies in front of the constellation Taurus, near the Pleiades star cluster, which makes it easier to locate. It rises in the east around sunset, is highest around midnight and remains visible all night.

Binoculars or a small telescope make the hunt much easier. Through a telescope, Uranus appears as a tiny greenish disc. It will remain in the evening sky until April 2027.
