Margashirsha Amavasya on December 8: rituals for ancestors and timings

23 October 2026

The new moon of Margashirsha is considered auspicious for holy dips and charity.

Margashirsha Amavasya falls on Tuesday, December 8. The Amavasya tithi begins at 4:12 am on December 8 and ends at 6:21 am on December 9, according to the calendar for New Delhi.

The new moon day of Margashirsha is considered sacred because Lord Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, described Margashirsha as the best of months.

Devotees take holy dips in rivers, perform tarpan and offer food to honour their ancestors. Donating food, clothes and blankets to the needy is considered meritorious in the winter month.

Many also observe a fast and light lamps in the evening, praying for peace and prosperity in the family.
