World Prematurity Day on November 17: caring for babies born too soon

23 October 2026

Kangaroo mother care and timely treatment can save many premature infants.

World Prematurity Day is observed on November 17 to raise awareness about preterm birth, when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Preterm birth complications are a leading cause of death among children under five worldwide, and India accounts for a large share of the world's premature births.

Premature babies may face breathing difficulties, infections, feeding problems and trouble maintaining body temperature. Many need care in neonatal intensive care units.

Experts say simple measures such as kangaroo mother care, with skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, exclusive breastfeeding and regular antenatal check-ups can greatly improve survival and long-term health.
