World Toilet Day on November 19: why safe sanitation still matters

23 October 2026

The UN day highlights the billions who still lack safely managed sanitation.

World Toilet Day is observed on November 19 to draw attention to the global sanitation crisis. It was founded by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 and became an official UN day in 2013.

Billions of people around the world still lack access to safely managed sanitation, which contributes to the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid.

India has built millions of household toilets over the past decade under the Swachh Bharat Mission, which aimed to end open defecation. Experts say the focus is now on regular use, maintenance and safe disposal of waste.

Clean, safe toilets are also crucial for women's dignity and safety and for keeping girls in school.
