India is the world's largest milk producer, thanks in large part to the cooperative movement.
India observes National Milk Day on November 26, the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien, known as the father of India's White Revolution. Kurien was born in 1921.
Kurien led Operation Flood, launched in 1970, which built a nationwide network of dairy cooperatives and turned India from a milk-deficient nation into the world's largest milk producer.
He played a key role in the growth of the Amul cooperative in Gujarat and headed the National Dairy Development Board for many years.
The day, first celebrated in 2014, highlights the importance of milk in nutrition and the role of dairy farming in supporting millions of rural families.
