World AIDS Day on December 1: testing and treatment remain key

23 October 2026

The day, first observed in 1988, aims to end stigma and promote HIV awareness.

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 every year to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, remember those who have died and support people living with the virus. It was first observed in 1988.

HIV attacks the body's immune system. Without treatment, it can lead to AIDS, the most advanced stage of infection. With timely antiretroviral therapy, people living with HIV can lead long and healthy lives.

Health experts urge regular testing, especially for those at higher risk, as early diagnosis allows early treatment. Effective treatment also prevents transmission.

The red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV awareness. Campaigns also focus on fighting stigma and discrimination, which still keep many people from getting tested.
