Govt proposes mandatory automatic emergency braking in new cars from 2030

24 October 2026

Existing models in production would have to comply by October 2032.

The road transport ministry has proposed making automatic emergency braking systems mandatory in new car models from October 1, 2030, to reduce road accidents.

Models already in production would have to comply from October 1, 2032. Electronic stability control would become mandatory for trucks from October 2027.

The system uses radar, cameras or LiDAR to monitor the road ahead and judge the risk of collision. It first warns the driver, then applies a brief brake pulse, and finally applies full braking if a crash is imminent.

Such systems are already common in premium cars and are increasingly being offered in mass-market models.
